The stock Sur-Ron is sprung for a roughly average adult rider. If you're notably lighter or heavier than that, the bike as delivered is working against you — and no amount of rebound tweaking fixes a spring that's wrong for your weight. Measuring static and rider sag
You need a tape measure, a zip tie or a helper, and a flat spot. Pick two reference points — typically the rear axle and a fixed point on the subframe or fender directly above it. Fully extend the suspension by getting the wheel off the ground and measure: that's your baseline.
Static sag is how much the bike settles under its own weight with the wheel back down. Rider sag is how much it settles with you aboard in full gear, in your normal riding stance, feet on the pegs — this is where a helper or a wall to steady yourself earns its keep. Rider sag is the number that matters most; static sag is a cross-check on whether your spring rate is right. Take each measurement two or three times and average them, because suspension stiction makes single readings lie.
Reading your numbers
Rider sag in the neighborhood of a third of total travel is a sane starting window for trail riding: go a touch less for a firmer, more responsive feel, a touch more for comfort and grip on chop. You adjust it with spring preload — the collar or adjuster that pre-compresses the spring. More preload reduces sag; less increases it.
Here's the catch that sends people shopping: if you have to crank preload to an extreme to hit your rider-sag number, your spring rate is wrong for your weight, and preload can't fix that. Maxing out preload to reach sag means you're too heavy for the spring; running it nearly loose and still sagging too little means you're too light. Rebound and compression, without the jargon
Once sag is set, damping is the fine-tuning. Compression damping controls how fast the suspension compresses over a bump; rebound damping controls how fast it extends back. Too little rebound and the bike feels like a pogo stick, kicking back after hits; too much and it packs down, staying low over successive bumps because it can't recover in time.
Change one clicker at a time, a few clicks at a time, and test on the same stretch of trail so you're comparing like for like. Write down where you started so you can always get back. Can I fix bad handling with clickers instead of setting sag? Rarely. Damping clickers fine-tune a suspension that's already in the right part of its travel; if sag is off, you're tuning around a foundational error and will never get it truly right. What if I can't get the sag into range with preload? That means your spring rate doesn't match your weight, and no preload setting fixes it properly.
