Bleeding is a small step up: with a syringe, fresh fluid, and some patience you can restore a firm lever at home in an afternoon. A word on safety before you start: brake fluid is corrosive to paint and finishes, and clean hydraulics are non-negotiable — grit or old fluid in the system is how you get a vague lever or a stuck piston. Work clean, keep fluid off painted surfaces, and never pull the lever with the pads out. Swapping the pads

Get the bike stable and the wheel off the ground if you need it to spin. Remove the caliper from its mount, and before anything else gently push the pistons back into the caliper — a plastic tire lever or a proper piston tool works — to make room for thicker new pads. Go slow and even; you're displacing fluid back up into the reservoir, so crack the reservoir cap if it's tight and watch that it doesn't overflow.

Slide the old pads out, note how they sat, and fit the new ones the same way along with any anti-rattle clips or pins. Reinstall the caliper, then pump the lever several times before you ride — the first pulls do nothing while the pistons travel back out to meet the disc, and riding off without pumping means grabbing a lever that isn't there. Bed the new pads in with a series of moderate stops before you trust them hard.

Bleeding the brakes

Bleed when the lever feels spongy, travels too far, or the fluid has gone dark — air or moisture in the line is the usual culprit. The goal is simple: push clean fluid through the system and chase every air bubble out the bleed nipple. A one-person syringe or vacuum kit makes this far easier than the old two-person pump-and-hold dance.

Keep the reservoir topped so you never suck air back in from the top, crack the bleed nipple to let old fluid and bubbles out, snug it before the lever bottoms, and repeat until what comes out runs clean and bubble-free. A firm lever at the end is your confirmation the system is solid. If the lever still feels soft after a proper bleed, the flex may be in a tired rubber line rather than trapped air — which is the cue for the upgrade below. Dispose of the old fluid responsibly and never reuse it: brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, and that absorbed water is exactly what lowers its boiling point and gives you a fading lever on a long, hot descent.

Pads and lines: what to fit

Two upgrades punch above their weight. Sintered pads bite harder and shrug off heat and water far better than organic pads — the right choice for a heavy bike ridden hard, wet, or in the mountains. A set of sintered brake pads is a cheap, direct improvement in stopping power and fade resistance over worn or organic stock pads.

The other is the line itself. A stock rubber brake line expands under pressure, and that expansion is the mushy feel no amount of bleeding fully cures. A braided steel brake line resists that ballooning, translating your hand pressure into clamping force for a firm, consistent lever. Fit both while the system is open and you gain more bite and a better feel in a single afternoon. Bed the new pads in with a dozen firm-but-controlled stops from moderate speed before your first hard ride, so the friction material transfers evenly onto the disc instead of glazing in one hot grab.

Is bleeding brakes too hard to do at home? No — it's a patience job, not a skill job. With an inexpensive one-person syringe or vacuum bleeder, fresh fluid, and care to keep the reservoir topped, most riders manage a clean bleed in an afternoon. How do I know when my pads are worn? Look for thin friction material, a glazed or scored surface, or a drop in braking power with a gritty feel. Will a braided line really firm up my lever? Usually, if your softness is line flex rather than air. Do I need to bleed the brakes after a pad swap? Not normally.
